Just a few years ago, I never wore lipstick. I’m not kidding… My mom would comment on my pictures on Facebook and say stuff like”You look great… You just need a little color on your lips!”
This was a pretty typical look for me a couple years back. I’d wear neutrals on my eyes with some black eyeliner, and everything was very minimal. I didn’t fill in my brows, I pretty much only wore bronzer on my cheeks, and I never wore lipstick- only lip gloss, if anything.
My makeup look has changed a LOT within the past couple years. Not only do I almost always wear lipstick now, but I have strayed away from nudes to bold colors, too. I still love a good nude lip, but I also like to change it up and play with color when I’m going, say, out to dinner or out with my friends for an evening.
One color I never thought I’d ever be able to wear was red. I always love a beautiful red lip, and I had always been jealous of those who could pull it off. But what I didn’t know was everyone can wear a red lip; you just have to find the best shade for you.
The first step is knowing what undertone you are. There are a couple of ways to check your undertone, but the easiest way is to check your veins. Look at the veins on the inside of your wrist. If they look greenish, you have a warm undertone, and if they are more blue, you have a cool undertone. Knowing your undertone will help you not only pick your best lipstick shades, but it makes matching makeup to your skin a lot easier, too.
Now for some tips to make wearing red lipstick a little easier!! Here are my best tips for rocking the red:
My number 1 tip for rocking red lipstick is don’t overdo your makeup. If you’re going to wear a bold lip color, go light on the rest of your face. Stick to neutrals on your eyes and a soft blush so that your lips will be the star of the show. 🙂
My number 2 tip is to make your color last longer by wearing a matching lip liner underneath. If you line and fill your lips in with a liner first, your color will be more vibrant and last a lot longer than lipstick alone.
Number 3 is a trick to keep you from getting lipstick on your teeth. After you blot on a tissue, stick your finger in your mouth and gently pull it back out. This will ensure that any lipstick on the inside of your lips ends up on your finger and not your teeth!
Number 4 is my favorite trick for not only wearing a red lipstick, but also making your teeth look whiter, too: shades with a blue undertone will make your teeth look whiter.
Warm skin tones can get away with wearing warmer shades of red, with hints of orange or brown. Cooler skin tones should stick to pinkier reds and those with blue undertones. Here are some of my favorite reds for all skintones:
