A couple of weeks ago, I decided it was finally time to touch up my roots. My natural color is black, but I’m going gray pretty quickly (thanks, Mom!), so once my roots start showing I get antsy for a new color job.

Money was pretty tight, so I couldn’t afford to go to my normal salon for a touch-up, so I decided to grab a box of color and do it myself. I’ve done it a ton of times before, so I feel pretty confident using the box dye on my hair.

I’ve been really aching to try a “fun” color on my hair: purple or blue or green; something out of the norm and creative. Once I got to WalMart to grab my dye, I spotted Vidal Sassoon’s new Pro Series colors. At first I was leaning toward a blue shade, but I decided that since my skin tone is more warm, purple would probably look better. My husband helped me choose between the two colors I was looking at, and I went home to get the job done.

I applied the dye exactly as the box says, and all went off without a hitch. It was easy to mix the developer and the color together, and I was able to easily cover all my hair with the one bottle, since my hair is pretty short. Once it was done sitting on my hair for the 25 minutes the box recommends, I showered to rinse it all out and condition my hair.

At first my hair was a beautiful deep violet, just like the box showed. I was really happy with the result, and couldn’t wait to show off my new purple locks. However, within just a week, my hair started showing up as more of a burgundy shade. Now here I am two weeks later and my hair is auburn; there’s only one little spot that’s purple, and that’s where I have a streak of bright white in my hair.

I know that these bright colors aren’t going to show up as well on dark hair, and I know that in order to get the best color payoff, it’s necessary to lighten your hair before coloring. However, this box promises “up to 8 weeks of vibrant color”. It has only been a little over 2 weeks and I am nowhere near the beautiful purple shade I wanted anymore. That’s a little much.

I have used Vidal Sassoon color on my hair before and had great results, but I am definitely not happy with this line. It’s very possible I got a bad box, but I think it’s safe to say that from here on out, I will either stick with a basic brown or black, or go to the salon. I will not be repurchasing this again.
